Navigation menus (navbar) are among the most viewed and clicked elements of a website's interface. They are essential for a website as they allow users to easily navigate from one page to another.
Let’s explore some navigation style principles that will enhance our users' experience. Here are our top UX Design tips for your Navbar.
Tip #1: Position the navigation menu in a strategic location
The location of your navbar is important. The web has developed a transparent and "standard" model for the placement of navigation menus: at the top, on the left side, or in the footer. When menus are placed outside these areas, it becomes difficult, confusing, and even exhausting to find them.
Tip #2: Help the user know where they are
Clearly indicate the user's current location. Use multiple cues, such as the ones below, to help them orient themselves. Our clients should never be surprised about where they are.
Tip #3: Prefer Mega-menus over dropdown lists
Research suggests that mega-menus are more enjoyable to use than dropdown lists. They display all content at a glance. Additionally, they can incorporate images, allow for more extensive grouping, and are more visually appealing.
Tip #4: Use effective hyperlink titles
A person should expect without difficulty that a hyperlink will take them where they want to go before they click on it (this is referred to as link smell). The most important element in this regard is the quality of our hyperlink labeling.
Tip #5: Place a suitable number of items
The adequate number of items on your menu depends on various factors, such as the complexity of your product or your clients' level of knowledge. But try to keep it to no more than 6 or 7 items. Order also matters!
Tip #6: Don’t hide your navigation menu
Navigation menus are one of the most clicked parts of the interface, and as they provide essential contextual records for the user, they must be constantly visible.
Recently, the default menu on mobile devices seems to be the hamburger menu, but there are options that do not completely obscure the navigation menu: tabs, innovative grouping, dropdowns, etc.
Bonus Tip: Focus on visual layout
A good user interface layout makes a significant difference. Below are some tips for creating a better experience. When in doubt, test! And don’t overlook approximate accessibility.
