Figma is by far the best tool when it comes to interface design. It is the ultimate software. First and foremost, it should be noted that Figma is free. The paid plan adds a few non-essential features and allows collaboration on more than three projects. However, for learning or personal use, the free version is more than sufficient. (I have been using Figma daily for a year in its free version.)
5 reasons why Figma is the number one tool:
1. A platform built for everyone.
Accessible from a web browser, all you need is an internet connection and a reliable computer (most recent computers will do). Whether you are on Linux, a Mac, or a PC, using Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or even Ecosia, it doesn’t matter. Figma is compatible everywhere and for everyone. There's no need to download software; just head over to Figma, create a free account, and you’re all set.
2. Design, even offline.
With the Figma desktop application, it's possible to design offline. A simple internet connection will sync all files in the cloud.
3. Figma is used by the most renowned companies.
Airbnb, Uber, Microsoft, Notion, Zoom, Dribbble, and many more. You might ask, so what? Well, if companies are using and recommending it, it means they are satisfied. Mastering Figma has become a real sought-after skill among businesses.
4. Collaboration is simple and fluid.
Anyone can leave a comment or share their perspective directly on a design mockup. Simply using a link, everyone can contribute, and this functionality was revolutionary during the lockdown. Figjam, a competitor of Miro, is a whiteboarding tool, perfect for iterating, brainstorming, and facilitating all kinds of video meetings.
For prototyping, the built-in features in Figma are powerful and well-designed (long live smart animate). The UI of Figma is thoughtfully crafted, making it easy to use its features. The latest update (as of the time of writing) is the support for videos.
Figma is accessible. Anywhere.
5. A strong community.
It's possible to access a dedicated community space directly on Figma. This space is filled with resources, designs, and plugins created by both Figma and designers of all kinds. It’s a true goldmine for finding inspiration.
The plugins enhance the Figma experience even further. Add an image with Unsplash, an icon with Iconify, placeholder text with Content Reel, or remove backgrounds with Remove BG—these are just a few examples of functionalities made possible through plugins.
So, are you convinced by Figma?
The recent acquisition of Figma by Adobe proves the success of this tool, which is still young but experiencing impressive growth, especially since the Covid pandemic.
Figma has all the traits to overshadow its competitors. The real question is: Does Figma have any competitors?
For now, no. But who knows about tomorrow? (hi Framer 🤫)
