In 2021, Integromat launched a beta version of 2022 called "Integromat Next." This beta involved numerous partners who were tasked with testing and providing feedback on the new features. For our part, we were somewhat disappointed with this Integromat Next version, which at first glance did not significantly change the tool.
However, on February 22, 2022, unexpectedly, Integromat did not officially announce the arrival of Integromat Next Generation, but rather that of Make. This marked a real marketing repositioning of this no-code automation tool, which incorporates many new features.
Make features a far more intuitive and user-friendly interface, allowing users to manage their data more effectively throughout the workflow creation process. Numerous functionalities have been added to optimize the no-code experience.
1. New Design and User Experience
Every section has been rethought and redesigned: text fields, date and time fields, dropdown lists, checkboxes, etc. Beyond the design, the interaction with these forms has generally improved. These fields, used during the programming of modules, now help to minimize errors, enhance understanding, and optimize the distribution of components, etc. Thus, programming modules is simplified and made more comprehensible.
2. Specific Data Types for Fields
For some modules, it was sometimes confusing to know what type of data to enter: text, numbers, HTML, etc. Make resolves this issue with a very simple feature: when hovering over the field name of interest, a message appears to provide more information on the type of data to enter.
3. Sections with Dropdowns
Certain Make modules contain a large number of fields to fill in for configuration. Make now offers the ability to hide the fields that are not of interest, simplifying the module setup. This type of dropdown helps manage multiple field modules much more easily, as can be the case with tools like Airtable or Hubspot.
4. Integrated Search Bar by Sections
Some tools feature a lot of files, and finding the one we want to connect to our workflow was sometimes a headache. Make solves this problem with a search bar integrated directly into the modules. Instead of endlessly scrolling through a dropdown, you can now search for the precise name of the file or document you are looking for.
5. Field Refresh Button
The "Refresh" button has been redesigned and extended to new integrations, making it more understandable and simplifying workflow configuration. This refreshes the data of a module based on the selected list. Such functionality is used, for instance, in Airtable and Coda.io.
6. Simplified Data Mapping Table
The data mapping table corresponds to the overview of data received from the various modules of the workflow. More specifically, this table appears when you are focused on a field of a module and seek to insert data from a previous module. It aggregates all the data from all the previously used modules, complicating data retrieval in larger automations. This interface has been significantly improved with a fairly simple feature, “collapse,” allowing all data to be expanded or grouped by module, greatly enhancing readability and allowing for better data differentiation.
7. More Understandable Functions
Functions in Make are an essential feature. We use them in many workflows, allowing us to push automations much further than what we could do in Zapier. However, it was easy to fall into the trap of functions within functions, etc. It was then difficult to navigate among all the . ; (), and other separators. Similarly, it was not possible to know if our function was valid until it was tested. These new features address these issues:
- Element Highlighting: By hovering over your function, Make highlights the various elements that compose it. Thus, you will no longer have trouble spotting the commas, parentheses, or semicolons that belong to your function.
- Error Message: An alert message appears when a function is missing one or more parentheses. This long-awaited "error message" functionality for functions has not yet been extended to other types of errors for the moment.
8. Optimized Array/Line Management
The management of arrays or lines has been significantly improved. In the previous version of Integromat, adding a new line to a form involved opening a pop-up that had to be programmed. Now, a simple "Add Item" button can be clicked to easily add as many lines as needed.
9. Accelerated Module Loading Times
For many tools like Google Sheets, Hubspot, Coda.io, Airtable, etc., the data loading time was several seconds. This slowed down the creation of workflows and was quite frustrating. Make has significantly reduced the loading time of these modules to enhance the user experience.
10. Mobile-First Platform and Launch of Make App
Manage your workflows from your phone! Make launches its mobile application, Make App, to make workflows accessible anytime, on any device. Workflow management will of course be greatly simplified, providing access to essential functionalities. For example:
- Activate or deactivate a scenario
- Access the details of an automation
- Clone a scenario
The smartphone experience of the Make platform in a web browser has been greatly enhanced. While using the app is preferred, Make has redesigned its Mobile-First interface to provide access to basic functionalities such as:
- making basic modifications
- navigating within workflows
- managing administrative tasks (users, plans, etc.)
Bonus: New Date and Time Function Interface
The date and time function has been rethought in “calendar” mode. Now, the function allows you to easily add new dates and times in the correct format, with just one click.
